In the wake of the HealthSouth scandal, he was tried on a 45 count indictment on charges that included fraud, conspiracy and mail and wire violations. He was acquitted in June, 2005. (Judge Karon Bowdre) He is facing an ongoing SEC complaint and was named in 7 counts of an indictment against Siegelman. One count was dropped and he was found guilty of the remaining six counts against him, in June, 2006.

Nick Bailey Former Siegelman aide and former acting head of ADECA Along with Lanny Young and Jimmy Allen, Bailey was one of the government's star witnesses; and he was the only one who gave testimony resulting in a conviction. Although he could not testify to any direct knowledge of an agreement Siegelman had with Scrushy, he said that he was at the Governor's office when he said Siegelman had a check for $250,000 and said "He's half way there." The existence of the check and the date of the meeting was disputed by the defense.

Troy King Attorney General, 2004- He was appointed Attorney General, by Riley, after Bill Pryor was nominated to the Court of Appeals. As AG, presided over both Siegelman indictments. He had been an adviser to Fob James and Bob Riley.
Jeff Sessions US Senator from Alabama Close friend of David Whetstone's. He was an Assistant US Attorney, and a US Attorney from the Southern District of Alabama. He was Alabama Attorney General, entering the Senate in 1997, being succeeded by Bill Pryor. He is in his second term in the Senate.
David Whetstone (former) DA in Baldwin County After some Siegelman votes seemingly disappeared in Baldwin County, enough to cost him the election, on advice of Attorney General Bill Pryor, Whetstone said that no one could touch the ballots and they would not be recounted. The DA has a close friendship with Jeff Sessions. Like many Alabama Dixiecrats, Whetstone was a democrat (appointed by George Wallace) who switched to the Republican party in the 1990s. He lost in the 2002 primary for the Alabama 1st District Congressional seat, and after being elected to another six year term as DA, gave up his seat in 2006. Riley appointed his replacement.

He is currently the CEO of the Alabama Business Council. He worked with Rove to run a slate of candidates for the Alabama Supreme Court.

The Janus-Merrit Group also funded Indian gambling interests. His groups were used as pass-throughs for money to defeat gambling interests in Alabama, including Siegelman's lottery.

He has pled guilty to five counts of corruption, in two cases: One involving the Indian Casinos he represents, and one involving the SunCruz Casino boats, in Florida. Because of monetary links and political ties, the political fallout from his convictions continues to be felt in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida, and everywhere in Washington, DC. He has close associations with Tom DeLay, Ralph Reed, George Bush and Michael Scanlon. He once said that he was in contact with Karl Rove and the Bush White House, and there is speculation of other Abramoff-Rove connections.

His lobbying group, Capital Strategies, made an unreported donation of $500,000 to the Republican Governor's Association. Some of this money made it to the Bob Riley campaign.

He turned Bob Riley around on the issue in what appears to be an effort to protect the interests of outstate clients and not the children of Alabama.
